How to change a light fixture

Potter Place is a rather standard new apartment that came with an ugly dining room light fixture.

This weekend I replaced the ugly light fixture with a cuter light fixture.

It was very easy and fairly inexpensive. When I first started to think about changing out the light fixture I was looking at fixtures that cost $100-$300, which is way more than I wanted to spend for something I may only use 1 year. Somebody suggested having one made. I found a store in town that makes custom lamps and picked out a shade. Then they charged $20 wire the shade into a light. The total cost ended up being $60. Once you have the new light switching them out is easy. I had someone show me this time so next time I'll be all set.
